New North Star Document

Elizabeth Giannotti was going through her late father’s papers and came across his personal logbook when he was part of the MS Padderson’s crew that delivered North Star from San Francisco to Herschel Island. Her father, Jim Hussey, illustrated his writing with photographs.

She writes: ” Thought you might be interested in reading his first person account from his 1935 trip aboard the MS Patterson and delivery of the North Star with photos of the North Star aboard the MS Patterson from a distance and from the crow’s nest, a photo of the stern of the North Star when it was being off loaded at Herschel Island, and my father’s August 1, 1935 account of the off loading.  He was 17 years old at the time.  His brother, Bob, had sailed on the MS Patterson’s 1932 Arctic trip.”

We are very thankful to Elizabeth for sharing this with us and for setting the record straight about the timing of North Star’s arrival. We had always been told that she didn’t make the trip until 1936.aaa1 aaa2 aaa3 aaa4 aaa6
